Available Sources Unfortunately, even though mankind was and still is keen to preserve history, at the same time humans are very successful in destroying historical documentation, resulting in many sources either been lost or their wherabouts no longer been known, sources been preserved only in parts or been irrecoverable destroyed due to war, fleeing and expulsion. Further, natural and other disasterous events as well as criminal acts are reducing the „inventory“ of sources every now and then. Regardless, nowadays, basically the following sources (available either physically or digitally) can be helpful while searching for family ancestors and descendants:

Archives with a more or less rich inventory often can be found in communities and at regional, state or national level. Also the church was an early archivist, who registered notable events of the day even before the state administration started to do so. In case one cannot or does not want to take the time to research on its own and on location, the service of an archivist on location, which often comes with a cost, can be used, where it may take some time until ones research request ends up on the top of the pile of to be finally processed.
