By following the basic principles described earlier, one first analyses existing and accessible as well as already available sources, full of hope that they suddenly reveal the information about the origin of the family and the meaning of the family name. Unfortunately, despite the fact that rudimentary information about the origin of the ZWIR T Z families was already available, this approach was less successful. The documentation at hands did not provide the answer to the questions. In the next step, research was expanded by using the internet and by consulting relevant literature on name studies in order to learn about the possible meaning of the family name. In awareness of the family history known so far, the first focus was on the German language. But no evidence could be found that the family name ZWIR T Z does derive from the German language. Accordingly, the second focus was on the Polish language.

Here, one comes across the term „ zwierz “ for „wild, big animal, creature, beast“ or related to hunting „game“; since the 14th century an attested inherited word from the ancestral Slavic language, which again can be traced back to the Indo-Germanic language; in the ancient Polish language, „źwierz“ / „źwirz“ is also attested with the meaning of „fauna“.

There is currently no proof that the family name ZWIR T Z indeed originates from this Polish term with this particular meaning. Also in other cultural language areas, no indication could yet be found that the name would have a similar or even a different meaning.
